Monterey: Second-home owners occupy two-thirds of this farming town

Just a few miles east of Great Barrington but seemingly in a world of its own, Monterey is among the county's most independent-minded communities, oriented toward farming, conservation and environmental causes. The town is holding on to its one-room schoolhouse, even though only about five students are enrolled.
