BLUE JASMINE (R). Woody Allen takes a break from comedy in his annual offering, this time focusing on a New York woman (Cate Blanchett) who must move to San Francisco after a serious life crisis.
CLOSED CIRCUIT (R). British crime thriller about the high-profile trial of a man charged with setting off an explosion in a busy London market and two lawyers once linked romantically, who begin to suspect a British government cover-up.
ELYSIUM (R). Director Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up to his breakout debut hit "District 9" is another action-heavy sci-fi picture. In the near future, the world’s wealthiest 1 percent (led by Jodie Foster) will abandon our ruined planet and move into a mammoth space station orbiting Earth. The people left behind (including Matt Damon) are required to work in factories to keep the satellite running smoothly. JOBS (PG-13). This biopic isn’t as fascinating as the man, much less the myth of entrepreneurial superiority he left behind. Much of the blame falls on the decision to cast Ashton Kutcher as Jobs. KICK-ASS 2 (R). Coming three years after the modest success of "Kick-Ass," this sequel covers much of the same ground. There’s a meaner streak this time to Kick-Ass and Hit Girl’s exploits in this rambunctiously funny -- though the laughs clot in your throat -- comic book fantasy of superhero wannabes. LEE DANIELS’ THE BUTLER (PG-13). Inspired by but not entirely based on the career of Eugene Allen, a White House servant to eight presidents during times of racial change. PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS (PG). Logan Lerman returns as the teenage son of Poseidon in this second adaptation of Rick Riordan’s popular fantasy novels.
PRINCE AVALANCHE (R). The broken line is being painted by a crew of two on a road that stretches through the backwoods of Texas, circa 1988, a year after a raging fire scorched 43,000 acres of woodland. Paul Rudd, Emile Hirsch.
THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES (PG-13). This adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s first book in her popular series of young adult novels focuses on Clary (Lily Collins), a teenage girl living in Brooklyn with her mother who discovers she’s the latest descendant in a line of Shadowhunters, half-human, half-angel creatures ordained to protect humanity from demons, vampires, slimy tentacled things and practically every other monster you can think of.
THE SPECTACULAR NOW (R). High school senior Sutter Keely is a drunk, but a functioning life of the keg party so folks don’t notice, or else want to be his friend so badly they won’t say anything. Especially Aimee Finicky, the honor roll mouse whose house is where Sutter awakens hungover on the lawn.
THE WORLD’S END (R). British sci-fi comedy about a group of friends who discover an alien invasion while on a pub crawl to end all pub crawls in their hometown.
WE’RE THE MILLERS (R). In order to smuggle a large shipment of marijuana from Mexico to the United States, a pot dealer (Jason Sudeikis) hires a stripper (Jennifer Aniston) and two kids to pose as his family.
YOU’RE NEXT (R). The adult children of a wealthy couple (Barbara Crampton, Rob Moran) gather in their country house to help them celebrate a wedding anniversary. Then the crossbow bolts come crashing through the window, nobody’s cell phone works, and people in the house start dying at the hands of hooded, animal-masked intruders.
