CAPTAIN PHILLIPS (PG-13). Tom Hanks stars as the captain of an American cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. An engrossing, sober-minded, fact-centered account that makes a tight edge-of-your-seat thriller, from an unfussy director with a talent for tension. HHH (Moore, McClatchy-Tribune News Service -- 10/12). 2:14.

CARRIE (R). Chloe Grace Moretz takes over for Sissy Spacek as the bullied teen with telekinetic powers in this "reimagining" of the Stephen King novel and the superior 1976 Brian De Palma film. Julianne Moore co-stars as Carrie's fanatically religious mother. The cringe-inducing opening tells us this is about the cycle of birth and death, the fierce bond between mother and child. That the opening scene is by far the most chilling in the movie is both the strength of this remake and its key weakness. The real horror here is at home; everything else seems like an afterthought. HH (D'Souza, San Jose Mercury News -- 10/21). 1:30.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 (PG). Having previously endangered the world and then saved it from a machine that turned water into food, a young inventor learns that his contraption survived and is now creating dangerous food-animal hybrids. The design and color palette is as glorious as ever. But the laughs are few and innovations fewer in this generally winded knock-off. With the voices of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Will Forte. HH (Moore, McClatchy-Tribune News Service -- 9/27).

DON JON (R). A handsome lothario's addiction to Internet pornography threatens to torpedo his budding relationship with a young lady who has an idealistic view of love and courtship. There isn't a wasted moment in this short, sweet, fun movie with a third-act punch that is so to the point it'll take your breath away. With Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza. HHH (Moore, McClatchy-Tribune News Service -- 9/28). 1:28.

ENOUGH SAID (PG-13). Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini (in his final leading role) are divorced parents, each with a college-bound daughter, who meet, date and take a real liking to each other. And then the trouble begins.

ESCAPE PLAN (R). A security consultant (Sylvester Stallone) and his new prison buddy (Arnold Schwarzenegger) try to figure out a way to escape from a new escape-proof prison. HH (Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune -- 10/22). 2:06.

GRAVITY (PG-13). Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as scientists adrift in space after debris from an explosion wrecks their space lab and leaves them as the only survivors. A technical and emotional spectacle. HHH (Persall, Tampa Bay Times -- 10/4). 1:31.

IN A WORLD... (PG-13). An underachieving voice coach is motivated by her father, the king of movie-trailer voice-overs, to follow in his footsteps as the voice-over star for a new generation of filmgoers. There are plenty of rough edges in this first film from actress-turned-director-writer Lake Bell but "In a World " is completely endearing; an entertaining first crack at what one can hope will be a long career behind the camera. (Sharkey, Los Angeles Times -- 9/11). 1:33.

INEQUALITY FOR ALL (PG). Documentary about America's widening income gap and shrinking middle class.

JACKASS PRESENTS: BAD GRANDPA (R). Johnny Knoxville, in old age makeup, and a kid drive across country staging bad parenting / dirty old man pranks on the unsuspecting.

MACHETE KILLS (R). Mel Gibson, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas and Sofia Vergara join the self-conscious B-movie fun in the second installment of writer-director Robert Rodriguez's campy action series about a machete-wielding Mexican government agent (Danny Trejo). HH (Gross, Austin American Statesman -- 10/14). 1:47.

PRISONERS (R). Hugh Jackman plays a working-class father who takes the law into his own hands when he tries to torture a confession out of a man suspected of kidnapping his daughter. Well-acted bunk. With Jake Gyllenhaal, Maria Bello. H (Persall, Tampa Bay Times -- 9/21). 2:31.

RUSH (R). Drama based on true story of the bitter, intense, downright nasty rivalry between Formula One racers Niki Lauda and James Hunt. Uncommonly well-rounded entertainment that takes the checkered flag. With Daniel Bruhl, Chris Hemsworth. HHH (Persall, Tampa Bay Times -- 9/30). 2:02.

THE FIFTH ESTATE (R). Bill Condon directs this drama about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his partner Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Bruhl). The film is so unwieldy, details blur. A cyberthriller without the thrills. H (Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune -- 10/21). 2:08.

THE SECRET VILLAGE (NR). Filmed in the Berkshires, this suspense drama focuses on an unsuccessful screenwriter and a spunky journalist who find more than they bargained for when they research an outbreak of mass hysteria and poisoning in a small village that has been harboring a dark secret.
