PITTSFIELD -- The Osher Life long Learning Institute at Berkshire Community College will present a special evening course in October, "Edna St. Vincent Millay: The Poetry of a Lifetime," at the Intermodal Education Center.
The course will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m., with sessions on Oct. 1, 15, 22 and 29. An optional visit to Steeple top is scheduled for Oct. 27 at 2 p.m.
Peter Bergman, executive director of the Millay Society at Steepletop, will cover the poetry from Millay's early years at Vassar and in Greenwich Village; review her two periods in Paris reflecting her experiences as an expatriate; and ending with work written at Steepletop in nearby Austerlitz, N.Y., where her work explores things in nature and the world political situation of the 1930s.
Millay's work is noted for representing experiences from the views of both men and women.
Her work is also characterized by her personal times of illness, constant pain and medications.
