Craig Harris, acclaimed jazz trombonist, and his band, Nation of Imagination, will present new work in "50 Years after the Fire," a concert with the MCLA Allegrettos, recalling key events of the Civil Rights Movement, 6 p.m. Sunday at the Church Street Center at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams. Harris has worked on this new music in residency this fall at MCLA. The concert will benefits Margaret A. Hart scholarship fund.
Mavis Staples, at right -- who sang gospel, soul and R&B with her family group for Martin Luther King, Jr., her father's friend, and has recorded solo for more than 40 years to international acclaim -- will perform at the Calvin Theatre in Northampton tonight, Thursday Nov. 7, at 8.
Ambassador Andrew Young -- diplomat, politician and Civil Rights activist from Georgia -- joined this summer in an ‘I Have a Dream' gospel brunch that recalled the music that inspired the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. during his lifetime and celebrated the historic speech King finished at the Willard Hotel in August 1963. He will speak at MCLA at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Church Street Center in North Adams.
