ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- As Alaskans toiled to dig out from the rubble of Friday’s great earthquake, six families in this area received word loved ones in Alaska are safe.
Known safe are: The Rev. John Albert Lunney, a priest from North Adams, brother of Miss Edna Lunney of 14 Chesbro Ave.; Edgar C. Rust III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rust Jr. of Buxton Hill, Williamstown; Airman First Class William J. McDowell, son of Mrs. Della McDowell of 16 River St.; Airman Francis M. Snide, son of Arthur Snide of Maple St., Williamstown; Capt. and Mrs. Edmund J. Adamczyk. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Adamczyk of Jordan St., Adams. His wife is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Swiatek of 34 Crotteau St.; Specialist Fourth Class Robert E. Mastroianni, son of Mr. and Mrs. Angelo S. Mastroianni of 307 Walnut St.
NORTH ADAMS -- The St. Francis team won the North Adams YMCA Church League basketball championship this past season. The squad members are B. Miller, R. Gallese, J. McCarthy, G. Benoit, G. Buzzell, L. Neathawk, L. George, G. Gwozdz, D. Dubie, G. Mullen, T. Malone. James Rowley is coach and Rickey Robinson is assistant coach.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Pvt. Matthew E. Walden has completed a tracked-vehicle repair course at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Walden is the son of Jean A. Walden of 22 John St. His wife, Dawn, is the daughter of George Estes of 204 East Main St., North Adams. The private is a 1988 graduate of Mt. Greylock High School.

Grandchamp, the state’s first and only licensed professional woman boxer, said filming in and around the city is expected to begin in late June and will take about four months. 10 years ago today
NORTH ADAMS -- North Adams Lodge 487 of the Benovolent and Protective Order of Ellks has chosen Thomas MacDonald, son of Donna and Ed MacDonald of 6 Stevens St., Adams, as the Elks Student of the Month for February.
MacDonald is a senior at McCann Technical High School. He plans to attend college after graduation, majoring in electrical engineering and computer science.
PROVIDENCE, RI. -- Local youth swimmers impressed at the YMCA New England Championships at Brown University. Heidi Kurpaska, of Williamstown, Erica Mach, of North Adams, and Brittany Gage, of Adams -- along with Tyra Mazzer and Megan Grace -- brought medals back from the meet, held March 19-21. All five girls swim for the Pittsfield YMCA Polar Bears swim team.
