According to Gazzillo, the fraudulent Web site has been blocked, and the bank has sent out two sets of e-mails, one on Tuesday and another on Wednesday, to customers to warn them of the scam.
"We've gotten a couple of calls," Gazzillo said. "We haven't heard from anyone who has been compromised by this."
The fraudulent e-mail, which contains the bank's logo, informs customers and non-customers that their access to online services has been suspended due to a "miss-match (sic) access code between your security system."
The e-mail advises viewers that in order to continue to access their online account they should click on a posted link where they will be taken "straight to where you can activate your account." Bank customers are further advised in the bogus e-mail that they should verify their security information to avoid suspension of their service. The fake e-mail is signed by the "Legacy Bank Customer Service Team."
"We believe this was an incident that was sent out to a major group of people, some who are customers, and some who are not customers," Gazzillo said.
"We'd also like to remind customers that we would never send e-mails asking for confidential or personal or account information," either by the bank's Web site or by e-mail, she said.
Through a process known as "phishing," Internet thieves frequently attempt to access personal information, such as account numbers, passwords, Social Security numbers and other confidential information, according to Legacy Banks.
Fraudulent e-mails often use company logos that look real to make them appear legitimate, and they often encourage viewers to visit a phony Web site where they are asked to divulge sensitive personal information.
Phishing e-mails can also attempt to install spyware on personal computers in order to capture keystrokes so that thieves can obtain login IDs and passwords.
A telephone scam asking both members and nonmembers of the Greylock Federal Credit Union for their account and PIN numbers surfaced in Berkshire County in March.
Legacy Banks has asked anyone who receives a suspicious request for confidential information that purports to be from the bank to not respond to it and to avoid clicking on any links that are provided. Those who receive such e-mails should report the incident to any Legacy Bank branch, or contact the bank's call center at 800-292-6634.
