The New Year has come and gone, but the Good Deals of 2010 go forward into 2011.
These few from past columns are especially worth remembering from what readers tell me.
n The Restore warehouse at 70 Jefferson Place in Pittsfield, launched by Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity last March, sells cabinetry, major appliances, doors, windows and other salvaged building materials at big discounts. Not only does it promote recycling, but earnings support Habitat's affordable housing program. Visit www.berkshirerestore.org or call (413) 266-1144.
n Hospitality Homes in Boston, a nonprofit that arranges free accommodations in volunteer host homes for out-of-town families of patients being treated in Boston hospitals. Call (888) 595-4678, or visit www.hosp.org.
n The Friday morning $1 bargains and other discounts at Sanford & Kid Antiques at 160 Houghton St. in North Adams. Owner Tom Randall runs a business clearing apartments and houses of unwanted furniture and draws crowds to his Friday bargain bazaar. Call (413) 663-7489 or (413) 652-2107.
n The phone call-blocking options offered through Verizon to short-stop telemarketers and other undesirables we don't want to hear from. Unfortunately, they can't screen out those automated calls from political candidates.
See the Consumer Info Guide in the Verizon directory.
n Free income tax return preparation offered by AARP volunteers at seven senior center sites around the Berkshires to people with low and moderate incomes who are 60 and older.
Ask at your senior center or visit www.aarp.org.
n The free legal advice offered military veterans through the Dial-A-Lawyer program sponsored by the Massachusetts Bar Association. Callers can dial a special number on certain dates of the year and get free advice from volunteer MBA members on benefits, housing, employment and family matters. Call (888) 844-2838 ext. 5782.
The service is also offered to the general public the first Wednesday of the month. Call (617) 338-0610.
n The Screening Colonoscopy Patient Fund offered through Berkshire Medical Center that will pay up to 50 percent of the co-pays or deductibles for colon-oscopies for qualified insured patients at BMC's Endoscopy Unit.
Call the Endoscopy Unit at (413) 447-2229 or visit www. BerkshireHealthSystems.org/ colonoscopyfund.
n The Assistive Technology Exchange that operates a free classified-ad type for people to buy, sell or exchange used medical equipment like electric beds, adaptive computers and wheelchair.
