Massachusetts: Tourism app now on iTunes

The Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism’s "Ask a Local iPhone application is now available on iTunes.

This free, on-the-move guide provides travel information, "local" tips, and deals from Massachusetts hotels, attractions, restaurants, and shopping destinations.

MOTT also recently launched its "MassFinds" blog on massvacation.com, featuring the state’s hidden gems and longtime favorites, as narrated by Massachusetts’ tourism mascot, MOTT the squirrel.

Pittsfield: $8K credit union grant aids schools

Greylock Federal Credit Union has provided an $8,000 leadership grant to the Bay State Reading Institute to help fund school turnaround partnerships at Crosby Elementary School and the Morningside Community School. The funding was provided to help meet BSRI’s federal grant match of $93,000 for the Pittsfield Public Schools.

BSRI, a U.S. Department of Education Invest in Innovation awardee and a Priority Partner for Turnaround of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, is in the midst of a five-year turnaround effort at Crosby and Morningside to improve instruction and increase student achievement.

Pittsfield: $5K bank grant aids housing project

Berkshire Bank Foundation has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Community Development Corporation of Southern Berkshire to support its redevelopment of the former New England Log Homes site in Great Barrington into low- and moderate-income housing.

The grant will be used to help cover project management costs of Phase II of the project which includes site planning, remediation plan design and permitting.

The New England Log Homes is an eight-acre brownfield site in the center of Great Barrington one block off Main Street, along the Housatonic River. Contaminated from the manufacture of log homes, it is the last remaining large-scale redevelopment site in the downtown area.

The remediation plan approved by the Department of Environmental Protection entails capping the entire site in parallel with initial redevelopment work including building foundations, parking, and landscaping for open space.
