PITTSFIELD -- CareChex, a national medical quality rating service, has ranked Berkshire Medical Center among the top 100 hospitals in the nation for overall hospital care for the third straight year.

BMC was also ranked among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for both overall hospital care and overall medical care by the same rating service.

Fairview Hospital was ranked by CareChex in the top 100 in the Nation and No. 1 in Massachusetts for patient satisfaction for overall hospital care, overall medical care and overall surgical care for the third year in a row. Fairview and BMC are both operated by Berkshire Health Systems.

BMC was ranked 90th in the U.S. for overall hospital care, in the top 2.6 percent of hospitals nationwide; and 172nd for overall medical care, in the top 5 percent, among nearly 4,000 hospitals. BMC was among the top 100 in the nation for cancer care and gastrointestinal hemorrhage care. BMC also ranked highly in a number of other categories of medical excellence and patient safety.

BMC also achieved top 10 percent in the nation Medical Excellence rankings for cancer care, gall bladder removal, gastrointestinal care, heart attack treatment, heart failure treatment, hip fracture repair, neurological care, trauma care and women's health. For Patient Safety, BMC was ranked by CareChex among the top 10 percent nationally for cancer care, heart failure treatment, hip fracture repair, neurological care, stroke care and trauma care.

In addition, BMC was ranked second in Massachusetts for cancer care and in the top 10 percent in Massachusetts for Medical Excellence for overall hospital care, overall medical care, gastrointestinal care, heart failure, hip fracture, neurological care and spinal surgery.

For Patient Safety, BMC was ranked in the top 10 percent in Massachusetts for heart failure, hip fracture, neurological care and stroke care.
