Pittsfield: Nuclea secures cancer test patent

Nuclea Biotechnologies Inc. has secured a second patent that is crucial to a signature cancer test. The patent covers a unique type of antibody instrumental in targeting Fatty Acid Synthase (FAS). Developed by Nuclea, the antibodies are instrumental in Nuclea’s signature method of monitoring the progression of cancer. This patent not only covers the anti-FAS antibodies, but diagnostic and prognostic methods of using them. Last month, Nuclea also secured a patent that covers a novel cancer testing and monitoring method that utilizes its Anti-FAS antibodies. This method works by assaying the expression of FAS from a biological sample of the cancer patient.

Pittsfield: Downtown Pittsfield hands out awards

Downtown Pittsfield Inc. honored the winners of its Downtown Community Recognition Award and Presidents Awards recently at its annual meeting at the Beacon Cinema.

The Downtown Pittsfield Farmers Market and Mary McGinnis received the Community Recognition Awards. Scarafoni Realty and it principal, David Carver, and Louis Allegrone III and the Allegrone Companies both received Presidents Awards. The farmers market opened on Mother’s Day in 2013. More than 51 farmers and artisans participated during its six-month run. John Valente and Regina Burgio accepted the award on behalf of the Farmers Market Steering Committee. McGinnis, a nurse, artist, baker and downtown advocate, was honored for founding the First Friday’s Artwalk.

Scarafoni and Carver were honored for converting the former Notre Dame School on Melville Street into 11 modern market rate apartments. The Allegrone Cos. were honored for their redevelopment of three downtown properties, including the Howard Building, which is expected to open in June. Louis Allegrone is the companies’ president.

Lenox: IEEE to hold lunch meeting

The Berkshire Section of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers Power Chapter will hold a lunch meeting on Thursday, June 26, at the Lenox High Voltage Laboratory on East New Lenox Road. "HVDC Converter Systems -- The Basics," presented by Frank Fisher, will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided. The costs for the luncheon are $4 for IEEE Power Chapter members and one guest; $5 for al IEEE members; $3 for all IEEE students; and $10 for non-IEEE members.
