Pittsfield: Central Berkshire Habitat gets $5,000 grant

Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity has received a $5,000 grant from the Guardian Berkshire Life Insurance Co. of America, and a $1,680 donation from Paul Rich & Sons in Pittsfield.

During the month of July, Paul Rich, in partnership with Lee Industries Inc., donated 5 percent off their Lee upholstered furniture sales to Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity.

Carolyn Valli, the executive director of Central Berkshire Habitat, sad the donation, "strengthens our ability to serve the hundreds of community members who partner with us in homeownership, financial programming and volunteer engagement."

Habitat is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their conditions.

Habitat is also expanding the Building for Tomorrow Financial Tools & Money Management program to help more families create financial stability and, ultimately, sustainability in the community.

The books will be distributed to students who attend Crosby Elementary School, and the Conte and Morningside community schools. The book is intended to bring school age children information on how to improve their diets while helping to advance their reading skills.

All three schools have been designated Title I schools by the federal government, which means they have high numbers of students who come from low income families.
