ESSEX, Mass. (AP) -- Two policemen and an off-duty Peabody firefighter helped to rescue an elderly couple from their sinking car after they backed it into the Essex River.

Police wouldn't identify the couple, from Westwood, but said the woman was 79 and the man was 95.

They said the couple backed the car into the river Saturday afternoon near Periwinkles Restaurant in Essex.

Police said officer James Romeos dove into the water and officer David Earle got into a nearby kayak. Meanwhile, off-duty firefighter Steve Pelligrini headed to the car with the harbormaster's motorboat.

Romeos rescued the woman and Pelligrini rescued the man with the help of the kayak.

The car eventually went completely underwater.

Both victims were treated and released at a local hospital.
