PITTSFIELD -- City police are searching for an armed robber who stole a small amount of cash from a gas station just before closing time on Sunday.

The masked suspect, believed to be female, walked into Elm Street Getty around 5:50 p.m. brandishing a small handgun and demanded the money from the register, according to Pittsfield Police. The store owner gave the thief, whom he said sounded like a woman, less than $100. She then sped off in a silver vehicle, last seen traveling on New Street, police said.

The store owner unsuccessfully tried to swipe the weapon from the robber's hand, police said. He was not hurt.

The suspect is described as being 5 feet, 5 inches tall, wearing a blue jacket. Detectives hope to get a better description after reviewing the gas station's surveillance video.

Anyone with information about the robbery should contact the Pittsfield Police Department's Detective Bureau at (413) 448-9705.
