MONTEREY-- A Sheffield bicyclist competing in the Berkshire Cycling Classic was hospitalized Sunday after another rider accidentally bumped his tire, pitching him onto highway blacktop.

The mishap occurred as both riders rounded the corner from Tyringham Road onto Route 23 heading westbound. Police were manning the intersection to control traffic.

The rider, who was wearing a helmet, suffered a forehead injury and was transported to Berkshire Medical Center for treatment, said Monterey Police Chief Gareth Backhaus. Later, he was transferred to Albany Medical Center, but is expected to make a full recovery, according to a hospital official.

Because of Federal privacy laws, the identity of the victim was not released Sunday night, Backhaus said. Monterey Firehouse EMTs responded to the scene, followed by the Southern Berkshire Ambulance Squad.
