Literacy Volunteers to hold tutor training

Literacy Volunteers of Berkshire County, an adult-to-adult literacy tutoring program, will hold an orientation for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer tutor in English for speakers of other languages.

The orientation will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Berkshire Athenaeum.

Anyone who has graduated from high school is eligible to become a literacy volunteer; knowledge of a foreign language is not required.

The orientation will include information about the services offered, what a typical tutoring experience is like, and what is involved in a volunteer commitment.

Karen Wallace, director, will provide information about the next training, which will be held at the library from 6 to 9 p.m. on May 31, June 5, 7, 12, 19 and 21. The orientation and training sessions are free.

Dalton:

Fire District’s annual meeting tonight at 7

The Dalton Fire District’s annual meeting will be held today at 7 p.m. at the fire station. There are no increases in either the district’s tax rate or the water bills.

Elections will be held for a three-year term on the Prudential Committee, a three-year term on the Board of Water Commiss ioners, a one-year term for auditor of the district, and a year-long term for moderator.

There are 22 other articles on the annual warrant.

The largest items include $117,635 for district administration; $547,060 to run the Water Department; $449,433 for loan payments; and $235,317 for Fire Depart ment. Other articles include a $24,245 proposal to buy a new truck for the Water Depart ment; $2,500 to match a grant to buy forest fighting equipment; and $30,000 toward a 5 percent federal grant match to buy a ladder truck with a pump.

Adams:

Award-winning artist to lead workshop

The Adams Free Library will host award-winning pastel artist Gregory John Maichack’s all-new workshop, "Que Sera, Seurat! How to Pastel Paint Optically with Color," from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the library, 92 Park St.

This pastel painting workshop serves beginners to advanced adult artists and is free and open to the public.
