PITTSFIELD -- A Pittsfield man was sentenced on Wednesday to up to four years in prison for sexually assaulting a North Adams teen and her grandmother in their home.
David T. Beckett, 49, pleaded guilty to four felonies in connection with the Dec. 28, 2010, assault that took place at an apartment on Ashland Street in North Adams. He was scheduled to go to trial in the case this month.
According to police and prosecutors, the younger victim, 18 at the time, was at the apartment that evening caring for her grandmother who was recovering from a heart attack. At about 6:30 p.m., the granddaughter answered a random knock at the door.
At the door, two strangers -- Beckett and another man -- asked to use the phone.
The granddaughter told them she would have to ask her grandmother and turned away.
The men, who had been drinking, entered the apartment, began to make lewd comments to the teen, and then sexually assaulted her and her 64-year-old grandmother. When the older woman threatened to call the police, the men left.
The men were arrested by the North Adams Police as they left the building.
On Wednesday, Beckett pleaded guilty to two counts each of indecent assault and battery and indecent assault and battery on a person 60 years or older. He was sentenced by Judge Daniel A. Ford to at least three years and no more than four years in state prison. He will also be required to register as a sex offender when he’s released.
According to Assistant Berkshire District Attorney Rachel Eramo, the victims were in agreement with the joint sentencing recommendation.
Beckett’s attorney, Edmund R. St. John III, told the court the case had been "heavily litigated" before they were able to settle on the recommendation.
The case against the second man who allegedly was with Beckett, Jermaine S. Russell , 31, of North Adams, remains pending.
At the time of his arrest, Russell had just finished serving 56 days in jail on a possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute charge.
At the time, authorities identified Russell as a suspected member of the Nine Trey Gangsters, a subset of the Bloods street gang.
