LEE -- A 29-year-old Pittsfield woman was killed and two others injured -- including a 6-week-old baby -- following a one-car crash on a dangerous stretch of Route 7 over the weekend, according to local authorities.
Lee police on Sunday identified the victim as Mayra Demedeiros, a passenger in a Jeep Cherokee driven by her boyfriend, Shaun Race, 28, from Pittsfield. The couple's infant child, Carmelo Race, was strapped into a car seat in the vehicle's back seat.
The family was traveling north on Route 7 at the West Road intersection around 12:50 p.m. Saturday when the Jeep veered off the road and hit a tree, police said. The impact flipped the vehicle on the passenger side and Demedeiros was ejected from the wreckage.
Lee police Sgt. Jeff Roosa said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shaun and Carmelo Race were taken to Berkshire Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, said Roosa. The father and baby remain hospitalized and were listed in stable condition on Sunday, according to BMC officials.
Local and state police are investigating the crash, but speed appears to be a factor, according to Lee police.
The section of highway along High Lawn Farm was closed for three hours while rescuers cleared the scene and police conducted their initial investigation.
