SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- A Springfield police officer has been shot and killed while responding to a report of a domestic disturbance.
Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney confirmed that an officer was fatally shot at the Lawton Arms apartment complex shortly after 1 p.m. Monday.
Delaney updated an earlier report that two other people were also killed, telling WWLP-TV that a woman who was shot remains in critical condition. Delaney said a man who died shot the woman and the officer before killing himself.
The Republican newspaper of Springfield identified the officer as Kevin Ambrose, a 36-year veteran of the Springfield police force.
Two Springfield officers were gunned down during a traffic stop nearly 27 years ago, the last time a city officer was killed in the line of duty.
Police planned a news conference late Monday afternoon.
