BOSTON (AP) - Federal investigators say they are launching a public awareness campaign that could include billboards and television ads to help solve the 1990 art heist from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

The campaign, which could go international, is expected to be similar to the operation that led to the capture of James "Whitey" Bulger.

The Boston Globe reports the campaign would reintroduce the public to the 13 stolen masterpieces, including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Degas, and Manet, and try to solicit information concerning their whereabouts.

The stolen art has been valued at as high as $500 million and its disappearance is considered the biggest museum theft in history.

Thieves disguised as police disabled security guards and stole the art.

Federal agents have recently searched two homes looking for the works.
