LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) -- Visitors to Lake George and nearby waterways will now face possible fines and jail time for violating a new law meant to stem the spread of invasive species.

Warren County is the first in the state to make it illegal to introduce alien pests like Eurasian watermilfoil and Asian clams by way of contaminated boats, trailers and fishing equipment.

The penalties can be as high as a $5,000 fine and 15 days in jail.

Conservationists are also battling zebra mussels and curly-leaf pondweed in Lake George. And there are other species they worry could infest the lake.

Even some common aquarium plants can become problems if they're dumped in waterways.

Signs are being posted at launches and visitors are being told to make sure equipment has been cleaned.
