GREAT BARRINGTON -- An Otis man is facing multiple charges after he went to pick up a package containing several pounds of marijuana.
Matthew Somes, 24, of Otis, was arraigned in Southern Berkshire District Court on Thursday on charges of possession with intent distribute, conspiracy to violate the Controlled Substance Act, and one count of a school-zone drug violation.
On June 13, a postal inspector posing as a U.S. Postal Service employee delivered a box containing approximately three pounds of marijuana to an apartment on Railroad Street in Great Barrington, according to police.
The package had been mailed to a Sara Lewis, but Tammy Barcomb, of Railroad Street, who claimed to be Lewis, accepted the package, investigators said. Barcomb allegedly stored the package in her room and called Somes.
Members of the Great Barrington Police Department and the Berkshire County Drug Task Force then entered the apartment with a search warrant and confronted Barcomb. She assisted the investigation, according to police, telling investigators that Somes was on his way over to grab the package.
Somes later arrived and took the package, at which point he was arrested, according to police.
The apartment was located within 600 feet of the Great Barrington Cooperative Nursery School.
It’s unclear if Barcomb will face any charges. Somes is due back in court Aug. 23.
