HINSDALE -- The town is once again in the market for a new police chief.

Christian S. Pedoty, the town’s first full-time police chief in 30 years, resigned at the end of last week, Selectman Bruce Marshall said on Monday.

"He’s looking for a better job," Marshall said.

Pedoty, 43, who was hired in April 2011, was allegedly assaulted last month by his live-in girlfriend, part-time Peru Police Officer Ashley Gabriel, who reportedly confronted him about having an affair with her sister.

Gabriel, 24, has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery.

Marshall said Pedoty wasn’t forced to resign, but he said he wasn’t surprised that he left considering the recent events.

"Things weren’t going very well with all the publicity," Marshall said, adding that he figured Pedoty had "decided to move on."

Pedoty could not be reached for comment on Monday. Police Officer Nancy Daniels referred all comments to the Select Board.

Marshall said the board plans to reorganize the Police Department at Wednesday night’s meeting, and place another officer in charge on a temporary basis. The commanding officer will be known as the "officer in charge."

The town currently has no timetable for hiring a permanent replacement.

"Not at this point, no," Marshall said.

A former lieutenant for the Metropolitan Transit Authority police force in New York City, Pedoty was Hinsdale’s first full-time police chief since Ralph B. Marshall, Bruce Marshall’s father, resigned in 1982, following 20 years on the job.

Hinsdale went back to a full-time police chief last year after voters in 2010 passed a nonbinding referendum that called for changing the structure of the department, a move that reduced the department’s budget by $26,000.

Pedoty replaced Christo pher Powell, a part-time chief who resigned in August 2010 after the department was realigned. Powell’s predecessor, Mark A. Green Sr., went to jail after pleading guilty to numerous fraud and theft charges, a situation that resulted in five of his officers being indicted.
