WOBURN, Mass. (AP) -- A Melrose man has been sentenced to five years in prison for severely injuring his 7-week-old son when he threw him to a concrete sidewalk during an argument with the boy's mother.

Carlos Edwards was sentenced Friday in Middlesex Superior Court in what District Attorney Gerry Leone called "an extremely troubling case."

Edwards was convicted of charges including assault and battery on a child with serious bodily injury. Prosecutors said he threw the baby during a fit of rage, causing traumatic head injuries. The infant was in the hospital for six days, and is now in state custody.

Police say Edwards met the baby's mother in front of her Malden home in July 2011 and the two argued over money. The parents didn't live together.
