PITTSFIELD -- Two 24-year-old Pittsfield men were arraigned on drug and weapons charges on Monday following their arrests the day before at the Allendale Shopping Center.
In Central Berkshire District Court, Lance O. Roberts, of Cheshire Road, pleaded not guilty to three counts of receiving stolen property over $250, three counts of illegal possession of a firearm, and one count of receiving stolen property under $250.
Ryan G. Yon, of Daniels Avenue, pleaded not guilty to one count of possession of heroin.
District Court Judge Fredric D. Rutberg set bail at $1,000 cash for Roberts, and released Yon on personal recognizance under several conditions.
Roberts and Yon were arrested on Sunday afternoon following a tip from a retired investigator for the Pittsfield Police Department who re ported suspicious activity in the shopping center's parking lot.
The retired investigator, James Winn, said one of the two men resembled a man he had seen acting suspiciously before his house was broken into on July 17. Officers later learned of another break-in on July 19 that resulted in three guns and some jewelry being stolen from a lot at the Pines Trailer Park on Cheshire Road.
Based on information re ceived by law enforcement authorities during the day, police executed a search warrant for another lot where Roberts resides on Cheshire Road.
Police also recovered evidence that suggested Roberts was keeping a list of calling hours and funeral service times for the recently deceased with the intention of breaking into their homes when family and friends would be attending services.
Yon was charged with possession of heroin after telling police that he had the drug on him.
The incident is under investigation by the Pittsfield Police Detective Bureau. Additional charges are pending.
Assistant District Attorney Daniel Hespler asked the court to set bail at $15,000 cash for Roberts, but Rutberg lowered the amount after Attorney David C. Cafarelli said the request seemed excessive for the charges filed against him.
