PITTSFIELD -- A Richmond man accused of punching an 11-year-old in the head and later attempting to squirt his own blood at a state trooper was released on $2,000 personal surety after his arraignment Tuesday in Central Berkshire District Court.

Jeffrey A. Harrington, 53, pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault and battery and single counts of assault with a dangerous weapon -- his blood -- and disorderly conduct.

According to police and prosecutors, Harrington was intoxicated on Monday afternoon when he attacked his girlfriend, 33-year-old Casey Dupont, at their house on Swamp Road and punched the woman's 11-year-old son in the head.

When state police from the Lee Barracks arrived at about 4:30 p.m. Harrington locked himself in an upstairs bedroom and refused to come out. Police, after calling for backup, were able to get into the room and arrest the defendant, a prosecutor told the court on Tuesday.

Harrington was so intoxicated, according to assistant Berkshire District Attorney Mary-Elizabeth Mack, that the troopers had to take him to the Berkshire Medical Center for his own safety. Once there, she said, Harrington was abusive and combative, pulled his IV out and aimed the blood squirting from his arm at Trooper James Somerville.

Mack told the court Har rington has four "assault ive type" cases on his record, an assault and battery on a police officer and three drunken driving offenses. The DA's office would likely be seeking jail time for the defendant, she said.

Attorney Robert D. Sullivan Jr. said his client "denies the allegations" and has a "good relationship" with his girlfriend's children.

Dupont refused to speak to police about the incident, according to Mack.

Judge Fredric D. Rutberg released Harrington on $2,000 personal surety and under the conditions he stay away from both alleged victims. He is scheduled to be back in court for a pretrial hearing on Sept. 17.
