PITTSFIELD -- A 49-year-old Pittsfield woman was listed in stable condition at Berkshire Medical Center Saturday night where she had been admitted for treatment after three motor vehicles collided in front of a tag sale on Cheshire Road, police said.
The two other motorists were also taken to BMC where they were treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said. The accident occurred in front of the entrance to the Allen dale Pines Trailer Park at 245 Cheshire Road.
The accident occurred at 11:25 a.m., 15 minutes before an 80-year-old city man was killed when his pickup struck a panel truck across town on Highland Avenue.
According to police, Kath leen McMahon, 55, of Ches hire Road was traveling north on Cheshire Road in a 2003 Nissan when she stopped to turn left into the trailer park.
As McMahon stopped, her vehicle was struck from behind by a 1999 Honda driven by Emma J. Scaramuzzi, 21, of Inman Street, Hopedale.
The initial collision pushed McMahon’s car into the southbound lane where it struck a 2012 Nissan driven by Mau reen E. Phillips of Maryland Avenue, Pittsfield.
Phillips, Scaramuzzi and Mc Mahon were taken by ambulance to BMC, but only Phillips was admitted for treatment.
A woman working at the tag sale, who declined to give her name, said the collision was loud.
"All of a sudden we heard a crash then parts began flying all over the place," the woman said. It wasn’t a pretty sight. It was scary to watch."
Debris from the three vehicles was scattered all over the roadway. According to witnesses, flying debris almost struck a woman whose car was parked near the accident scene.
A large crowd of onlookers gathered on both sides of the roadway, as police, fire and ambulance personnel arrived at the scene.
Police closed Cheshire Road temporarily between the Berk shire Mall Road in Lanes borough and the Allendale Shopping Center in Coltsville.
The three vehicles were all towed from the scene.
