PITTSFIELD -- Police are looking for the assailant of a 31-year-old man who was beaten and then robbed at gunpoint early Monday as he was walking on a city street.

According to Pittsfield Police Capt. John Mullin, the victim was walking home on First Street about 12:30 a.m. Monday, felt he was being followed, and turned onto Hamlin Street to try and shake his pursuer. At some point, he was hit in the head from behind, had a gun pulled on him and was robbed.

The victim did not require hospitalization for his injuries, said Mullin.

Police say the suspect made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, a blue bag containing a power screw gun, a Bluetooth ear piece and some prescription drugs. He was last seen running east on Hamlin Street.

The assailant is described as a clean-shaven white male about 32 years old with a thin build. The man, about 5-foot-9, was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt zipped up to his neck and possibly had on brown pants.

The gun was described as a black automatic pistol.

Police believe there may have been at least one witness to the crime.

Anyone with information is asked to call Pittsfield Police Detective Thomas Harrington at (413) 448-9700, ext. 307.
