GREAT BARRINGTON -- With the closing of the Adult Basic Education program at South Berkshire Educational Collaborative this fall, a number of area agencies are working together to help fill the education gap.
Construct Inc., located at 41 Mahaiwe St. in Great Barrington, is one resource in southern Berkshire County that is offering help. Construct has been offering an ABE program for about 20 years. Its day program includes GED test preparation and tutoring services, but does not offer English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) classes.
The Construct program also offers year-round, open entry/open exit flexible class schedules.
"We will teach anyone who wants to get their GED," said Cara Davis, Construct’s executive director. She noted that this fall, Construct has the capacity to take on more GED preparatory students.
The ABE program, like others, is offered at no cost to adult learners who do not hold a high school diploma.
Construct’s ABE teacher, June Hailer, provides one-on-one and small group lessons in mathematics, writing and reading comprehension. Davis said Construct serves anywhere from one to 10 adult learners at any given time.
Hailer also works with people with learning disabilities and can help a student request special accommodations, like a time extension, if needed.
Classes are offered in three-hour modules and students can take modules up to three times a week for a total
Davis said Construct’s ABE program used to collaborate with the South Berkshire Educational Collaborative program.
She called the closure of the collaborative’s ABE program a "huge problem and big loss to our community."
