BECKET -- Police here say a local man who allegedly attacked a family member then led them on a high-speed chase over the weekend has been apprehended in Westfield.
State police arrested Gary A. Weiner at a motel in Wesfield on Wednesday evening. Weiner was taken into custody willingly, and he was being evaluated medically at Noble Hospital in Westfield before his return to the Berkshires.
Police in Becket say he'll likely be arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court on Friday.
Weiner fled police last Friday night after they responded to a call that he attacked a family member. He made off in his pickup truck, reaching speeds of 80 mph with police in pursuit. He ended up crashing the truck and fled on foot. He found another vehicle nearby that he used to continue an escape, only to crash again and flee on foot. The incident spawned a widespread search by police that lasted throughout the rest of the weekend.
Becket police interviewed Weiner in Westfield on Wednesday night. They described him as relieved the ordeal was over, and said Weiner told them he made his way to a payphone and called a cab to take him to Westfield.
More charges are pending against Weiner, who's already facing a range of charges from domestic abuse to various motor vehicle ones.
Weiner lives at 89 Lady of the Lake Court in the Sherwood Forest development.
