PITTSFIELD - A level 3 sex offender was held on $100,000 bond after his arraignment Monday in Central Berkshire District Court for allegedly sexually assaulting two young children over the course of the past nine months.
Arthur Russell Jr., 53, of Cherry Street, pleaded not guilty to two counts each of rape of a child with force and indecent assault and battery of a person under 14 for allegedly abusing two children, ages 7 and 9, in the city.
Court records allege that Russell's abuse of the children goes back to the beginning of 2012. He was arrested by Pittsfield Police on Monday.
Because of the age of the alleged victims, the police report has been sealed and few details are publicly available, including the relationship between Russell and the two children.
A level 3 designation is given to sex offenders the state's Sex Offender Registry Board believes are most likely to reoffend. Russell was sentenced to 2 1 2 to four years in state prison in 2005 in Berkshire Superior Court after admitting he sexually assaulted a girl in Dalton between 2001 and 2002.
The victim was between the ages of 13 and 14 at the time of the assaults, according to Eagle records.
On Monday, Russell was ordered held on $10,000 cash or $100,000 bond by Judge Paul M. Vrabel. The bail amount had been agreed to by Russell's attorney, Nathaniel K. Green, and prosecutor Rachael Eramo. The judge also ordered that if the defendant makes bail, he must stay away from the two children and their families.
Russell is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 30, but the case likely will be transferred to Superior Court.
