PITTSFIELD -- A Bradford Street man was sentenced to nine months in jail on Friday after admitting he took a cab to his ex-mother-in-law’s house in Hinsdale, burglarized it, and took the cab back home.
Christopher C. Corley, 39, pleaded guilty to three felonies for the July 29 crime. According to a Hinsdale Police report, Corley took a cab from Pittsfield to the Hinsdale home of his former mother-in-law, who was on vacation at the time. The cab was equipped with a videotape system and recorded Corley’s exchange with the cabbie.
The defendant was carrying a backpack and a flashlight and asked the driver whether he minded if he put some items in the trunk. "I’m going to my ex-wife’s mother’s house to pick up some belongings," Corley told the cabbie, according to the report.
Corley’s 19-year-old daughter was at the home, heard noise outside her bedroom door and called 911. Corley made it out of the house and left in the cab just minutes before police showed up. He made off with several pieces of the ex-mother-in-law’s jewelry.
Corley was arrested a few days later after going to the Hinsdale Police Department to discuss the matter.
Corley was out on bail at the time for allegedly attempting to stab a 43-year-old man in Hinsdale in May. The knife made contact with the victim’s chest, but didn’t actually penetrate the skin, according to a police report.
On Friday, Corley pleaded guilty to breaking and entering in the nighttime for a felony, larceny over $250, and entering at night for a felony and putting a person in fear.
Corley’s attorney, Jerrold F. Trehey, said his client has an alcohol problem. He asked for a 90-day sentence. The defendant has already served 70 days.
The Berkshire District Attorney’s Office asked for a split sentence, with 70 days in jail, probation and $3,000 in restitution.
Judge Paul M. Vrabel sentenced Corley to nine months at the Berkshire County Jail & House of Correction. He said since Corley was destitute and disabled it was unlikely he would be able to pay the restitution.
