GREAT BARRINGTON -- Two passengers were extracated from their car and airlifted to Albany Medical Center early Friday morning after hitting a "huge" tree, police said.

It happened just before 2:30 a.m., when the driver, 31-year-old Thomas Stevens, hit the tree head-on traveling southbound on East Sheffield Road, police said. The accident was called in to dispatch by another passing driver, police said.

Emergency personnel arrived minutes later, but it took nearly an hour to extract both Stevens and the passenger, 26-year-old Monica Havill, from the 2004 GMC Envoy. After each person was extracted, they were immediately transported to Albany Medical Center via MedFlight to be treated for injuries.

It took two choppers to transport the passengers. A spokesman at the medical center said the condition of the crash victims was not available.

The car is considered a total loss, police said.
