PITTSFIELD -- With more than $115,000 in advance sales for 2013 season passes already in the till, Barrington Stage has announced record ticket revenue and attendance for its summer and fall season that ended last month.
"This the first year I can really say we're coming out of the recession," said Artistic Director Julianne Boyd in a telephone interview. She described the goal for next season as pumping up subscription sales. "People are really coming on board for the whole season," she said.
The past season's box-office fire was fueled by a nearly five-week, nearly sold-out run of the classic musical "Fiddler on the Roof." It was the best-selling musical in the theater's 16-year history.

Individual ticket sales represented $1.1 million of the total. For the overall season, about 66 percent of Main Stage seats were sold, about the same as last year.
The theater has also paid off most of the $7 million cost of its Union Street playhouse and the adjacent Octagon House, site of administrative offices. Only $193,900 of the debt remains.
Having moved to Pittsfield in 2006, Barrington Stage reported that 27 percent of its tickets were sold to Pittsfield residents this year, continuing an upward trend.
For next summer's musical, Boyd is planning a production of "On the Town," Leonard Bernstein's first score for the theater, choreographed by Jerome Robbins in his Broadway debut.
"It's not as well known as ‘Fiddler' or ‘Guys and Dolls,' " Boyd said. "I thought we should do a show our audience hasn't seen, and we're getting a good response from group sales." Boyd is also delving into Shakespeare comedy next season with an August run of "Much Ado About Nothing."
She said she notified Shake speare & Company Artistic Director Tony Simotes in advance of the season announcement.
"He said, ‘great,' Boyd added. "We're both feeling the need to expand the theater worlds we live in. We have a great relationship."
