PITTSFIELD -- The Berkshire County unemployment rate dipped slightly in October, but still remained a shade above 6 percent.

The local jobless rate dropped from 6.3 to 6.1 percent in October, according to figures released on Tuesday by the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

There have been only slight changes up or down in Berkshire unemployment over the last seven months. The rate has fluctuated between 5.8 percent and 6.3 percent since May.

Unemployment in the Pittsfield and North Adams labor market areas also dropped slightly in October, but remained the same in Great Barrington at 4.5 percent. Seasonally unadjusted labor rates dropped in 17 of the state's 22 labor market areas last month.

The rate also dropped in the county's two cities, with the biggest decrease in North Adams where unemployment dipped more than half a percentage point to 7.1 percent.

The labor force, unemployment rates and jobs estimates for all 50 states are based on statistical methodologies specified by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.
