LEE -- Lee Middle and High School is not soliciting local businesses to advertise in a calendar that portends to benefit the sports teams, school officials said on Wednesday.

According to school administrators, several businesses have called the principal's office inquiring about the phone solicitations they've received this week from a company claiming to be SRI Publishing. The company tells the business owner the advertising will fund a calendar that includes the schedules of the Lee High athletic teams.

Principal Joseph Turmel said the solicitations were done without the school's knowledge.

"Our fundraising for sports teams is through our booster clubs," he said. "Anything we do for solicitations is internal."

The president of Henry's Electric, Scott LePrevost, said the phone call he fielded on Tuesday from SRI seemed legitimate -- at first.

"The caller gave his name and who he represented and asked if I wanted to do the same thing as last year," LePrevost said. "I asked him to send me a copy of what I agreed to last year. But when I didn't receive it, that raised suspicion."

School officials have notified the Lee Police Department about the phone solicitation. The police say they haven't heard from any of the businesses contacted by the publishing company.
