BOSTON -- One year ago, the University of Massachusetts earned a comfortable win at home against Northeastern. On Tuesday night, the Minutemen went on the road and needed a late rally to beat the Huskies.
Chaz Williams' layup with 1:51 left in the game broke a tie and helped propel the Minutemen to a 72-66 win over the Huskies at Matthews Arena.
It was a bounce-back win for UMass (4-3) after the Minutemen lost to Miami (Fla.) at home on Saturday. Northeastern (4-4) has now lost four straight.
UMass led by 40-39 at halftime and by eight just 1:37 into the second half. Northeastern came back and eventually led 61-55 with 4:24 left. From that point, UMass outscored the Huskies 17-5 to pull away.
Jesse Morgan's 3-point basket with 3:05 left to play tied the game at 62. Northeastern then had three chances at a go-ahead hoop, missing a trey, a jumper and a layup. Raphiael Putney cleared the board and Williams took it the distance for the hoop.
Williams also had 18 points, while Sampson Carter made his first start and scored 14. Carter was starting in place of Cady Lalanne, who was suspended for a violation of athletic department policy for his conduct at an on-campus function Saturday night after the Miami game.
Reggie Spencer had 15 points to pace the Huskies, while Quincy Ford had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Harvard 79, Boston Coll. 63
BOSTON -- Siyani Chambers matched a career high with 21 points and Wesley Saunders added 18 on Tuesday night to lead Harvard to victory over Boston College -- the Crimson's fifth consecutive victory over its crosstown, power-conference rival.
Chambers scored eight points during a 15-1 run early in the second half that turned a six-point lead into a 57-37 advantage with 121 2 minutes to play.
Ryan Anderson scored 23 with seven rebounds for Boston College (3-5), which was without starting center Dennis Clifford, who sat on the bench with his right foot in a boot.
Andrew Van Nest, who played for Harvard (4-3) as an undergraduate but is now at BC for graduate school, scored four points for the Eagles against his former team.
