BMC ranked in top 5%
for pulmonary care
Berkshire Medical Center has been named one of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Pulmonary Care, according to a new report by Healthgrades, which is a
leading provider of information to help consumers make informed decisions about physicians and hospitals.
BMC also received Healthgrades' Excellence Awards in pulmonary care, stroke care and critical care. These honors place BMC in the top 5 percent of hospitals in the U.S. for pulmonary care, and in the top 10 percent for both stroke and critical care.
In Massachusetts, BMC is ranked fourth in all three categories for 2013. BMC also received the 2012 Excellence Award for emergency medicine for performance in the top 5 percent in the nation earlier this year.
The findings are part of American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2013: Healthgrades Report to the Nation, which evaluates the performance of approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide across nearly 30 of the most common conditions and procedures.
BMC received five-star ratings from Healthgrades in a dozen areas of clinical care: heart attack, heart failure, hip fracture, stroke, overall pulmonary services, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, carotid surgery, peripheral vascular bypass, gastrointestinal bleed, sepsis, and respiratory failure.
BMC has sustained many of these five-star ratings over the years.
Website aims to help jobless self-employed
The U.S. Small Business Administration and the U.S. Department of Labor have formed a new website to support state workforce and unemployment agencies in implementing or enhancing Self-Employment Assistance programs.
The new program expands on guidelines issued in May, which included $35 million in funding for states to implement or expand these programs that were made possible through the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012.
Participation in Self-Employment Assistance programs is voluntary for eligible unemployment insurance recipients, and enables them to receive financial assistance equal to their unemployment insurance benefits while they receive important entrepreneurial training and resources to help launch their own businesses.
The new Self-Employment Assistance website can be accessed at https://sea.work force3one.org.
