PITTSFIELD -- A 20-year-old who police said had a quarter pound of marijuana on him when they pulled him over for allegedly driving close to 40 miles over the speed limit is free on personal recognizance after pleading not guilty to the charges in Central Berkshire District Court.

On Friday, Deacon J. Troiano, 20, of Delancy Avenue appeared before Judge Paul M. Vrabel and pleaded not guilty to a single count of possession of a class D substance with the intent to distribute.

The defendant was stopped by Pittsfield Police at about 9 p.m. Thursday on Merriam Street after allegedly going 63 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone. A K-9 Patrol officer alerted its handler to the presence of drugs from outside Troiano’s SUV and $1,200 worth of marijuana was located inside the vehicle, according to a police report.

Troiano is scheduled to be back in court on Jan. 18.
