WESTFIELD -- The scoreboard at Westfield Vocational High School got a heck of a workout on Saturday afternoon.
With guard Tavereck "Tank" Roberson scoring a career-best 47 points, St. Joseph's overwhelmed their host, 137-31.
Roberson's point total is a school record, breaking Billy McKeever's 43, set in 1962.
It is not a county record. In 1921, John B. Hull scored 58 points for Searles in a 120-13 win over Philmont High School.
St. Joseph's coach Paul Brindle said Roberson actually only played about 2 1/2 quarters.
"We rotated everyone in and out," he said. "Everybody got a chance to play. We played straight up defense. No presses, just man-to-man."
Roberson now has 1,296 points, putting him 17th on lthe Berkshire County all-time scoring list. Next on the list is Brindle himself with 1,302.
Brindle emphasized that St. Joseph's was not trying to run up the score.
"This was not a team I would have scheduled," he said. "We were invited to the New Leadership Christmas Tournament, and Westfield was the team we were matched up against."
The Christmas Tournament was canceled due to bad weather, and rescheduled for Saturday.
"I would have preferred to play New Leadership," he said. "But this is the game that was scheduled."
He added that ‘we don't look for games like that. We try to play the toughest schedule we can. We go out of our way to do that."
The Crusaders took a 34-4 lead after a period, and Brindle began playing his substitutes. The score was 53-19 at halftime. Roberson had 25 points.
Brindle said he put his starters in to begin the third quarter, but began to pull them about midway through. St. Joseph's outscored Westfield 54-6 in that period. Roberson, he said, played about four minutes of that quarter. In that time span, he scored 22 points, said Brindle.
"He was on fire," said Brindle. "He missed, I think, three shots all night."
Jon Bianchi added 14 and Matt Begrowicz had 12 for the winners. No player scored more than five points for Westfeld.
