AMHERST -- The Williams College men's basketball team brought a 11-game winning streak and a No. 8 national ranking into LeFrak Gymnasium Wednesday night. The Ephs likely leave without both.
Willy Workman and Aaron Toomey combined to score 44 points and the Amherst defense held Williams to one hoop in the 2:56 as the 14th-ranked Lord Jeffs stunned Williams 83-67.
Williams has now lost three straight games to Amherst.
The Ephs led by 11 points in the first half when Nate Robertson scored on a drive to the basket with 6:28, making it 35-24. The Lord Jeffs responded with a 18-3 run that put them up 42-38 at halftime.
Williams hung with Amherst in the second half, cutting the Jeffs' lead to 49-48 on Mike Mayer's jumper with 18:40. Amherst's Peter Kaasila answered with a putback, then Toomey hit a 3-point shot, and the Lord Jeffs never trailed again.
Mayer had 21 points to lead Williams (16-2), while Taylor Epley had 17 points and Robertson 11.
Workman had a game-high 24 points for Amherst (16-2).
This is the non-league game. The two teams will play at Chandler Gym on Feb. 8 in the NESCAC game.
