Wrestlers in Western Massachusetts have one more week to prepare for the section’s best.
The MIAA pushed back its sectional wrestling tournaments -- including the Western Mass. Division III tournament, which will be held at Monument Mountain Regional High School -- one week on Friday due to the impending snowstorm. The Western Mass. D-III meet will now run Feb. 15-16.
This also pushes the state and All-State tournaments back one week, meaning Massachusetts’ best wrestlers will likely have to miss the New England championship meet.
"I think it’s the right thing to do, obviously," Mount Greylock coach Ray Miro said of the sectional postponement. "If we get this snow, it’d be dangerous to try to run it. I thought there might be an outside shot we might go Sunday and Monday."
The postponement is one of many around Berkshire County and Western Massachusetts. Friday’s entire high school sports schedule in the county has been postponed.
Monument coach Gordie Soule sees potential benefits to the Western Mass. wrestling postponement -- other than staying off the roads in bad weather, of course.
"Getting healthy, another week to condition," he said. "Another week to work out the kinks."
Miro said his wrestlers had a harder day of practice than usual Friday.
"I’m giving them [today], Saturday and Sunday off," he said. "They know they need to get a workout in."
