PITTSFIELD -- City police are appealing to the public for information that might help investigators solve an ongoing series of break-ins at and thefts of money from local businesses this winter.

Since Jan. 4, breaks have been reported at businesses on Dalton and Yorkshire avenues and North, West Housatonic, Commercial and East streets. In some cases, cash was taken from unlocked registers. In others, a locked register was smashed on the floor and a register was stolen. The break-ins occur at night, according to police.

The thief or thieves gain entry by smashing through glass doors or windows or by prying doors open.

Police ask neighbors to report suspicious activity and call police if they suspect their business was entered, even if nothing was taken. Police can be reached at (413) 448-9700.
