BOSTON (AP) - U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren has invited a Boston mother whose son was shot to death to be her guest at President Obama's State of the Union address.

Warren said Kim Odom has worked to reduce gun-related killings in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston since her 13-year-old son, Steven, was killed in 2007 on his way home from playing basketball.

The Massachusetts Democrat praised Odom as "a powerful voice calling for meaningful action to stop gun violence."

Warren supports reinstating a ban on assault weapons, prohibiting access to high-capacity ammunition magazines, strengthening background checks on gun sales, and increasing support for mental health programs.

U.S. Rep. Edward Markey has invited Ann Marie Crowell to be his guest at Tuesday's speech. Crowell's son, Brian, was accidentally shot to death on Christmas Eve in 1997.
