PITTSFIELD -- A city woman on probation for drunkenly biting a woman's breast during a fight in October received a one-year jail sentence on Wednesday after pleading guilty to charges associated with slashing an ex-boyfriend's face with a box cutter last month.

Melissa J. Mason, 20, of Jubilee Terrace, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon before Central Berkshire District Court Judge Paul M. Vrabel. Mason was represented by attorney Glenn W. Keiderling Jr.

The two charges were filed after Mason smashed a 40-ounce bottle of beer over an 18-year-old woman's head at a Pittsfield party on Feb. 10. Mason then punched the woman in the face, before slashing her 18-year-old ex-boyfriend's face, according to police and prosecutors.

Mason also received a concurrent six month jail sentence for violating her probation. She had been placed on probation in December after being charged with assault and battery. Mason bit a 17-year-old girl's breast then refused to let go during an alcohol-fueled fight that took place at another city house party on Halloween night.

In that case, Mason had been charged with assault to murder by the Berkshire District Attorney's under the theory of joint venture with a co-defendant, 21-year-old Nicholas J. Konton. But the District Attorney's office later dismissed those charges against both defendants.

In October, Mason held the teen down while Konton, the victim's former boyfriend, put a loaded gun into her mouth and pulled the trigger, according to a Pittsfield Police report. The gun didn't go off.

Several witnesses to that incident denied seeing a gun, and said the victim had lied about what happened. Attorney Michelle Mechta, who represented Mason in December, said her client only fought the teen after the victim had harassed her for hours.

Police said they recovered a handgun, marijuana and cocaine from Konton when he was arrested.

Konton pleaded guilty to several drug and weapons charges and is currently serving a 21/2 year jail sentence.
