WILLIAMSTOWN -- Police announced on Tuesday that they are searching for a suspect who assaulted and attempted to rob a pedestrian at knifepoint Sunday night.

According to Police Chief Kyle J. Johnson, at about 9:30 p.m., the pedestrian was at the intersection of South and Main streets when a person approached from behind and demanded money.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall. He was wearing a dark jacket with a hooded sweatshirt underneath and a beanie hat, Johnson said.

During the assault, the man brandished a knife, but the pedestrian was able to break free and call for help.

Johnson said the pedestrian was treated at North Adams Regional Hospital for minor facial injuries sustained during the attempted robbery.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Sgt. Scott McGowan at the Williamstown Police Department, (413) 458-5733.
