SHEFFIELD -- Berkshire School announced the resignation of Head of School Michael J. Maher on Monday and said Pieter Mulder, a longtime administrator, would take the leadership role on an interim basis, according to a news release.

Maher announced his resignation as head of school in a memo to the Berkshire School. Maher could not be reached by press time.

For nine years, Maher has served as head of Berkshire School, the college preparatory boarding and day school in Sheffield that has 386 high school and post-graduate students. It was founded in 1907.

During Maher’s nine years at Berkshire School, the school doubled its admission numbers and tripled the school’s endowment, according to a news release. Under his leadership, the school also developed a leading research program in math and science, made investments in renewable energy and sustaining the environment, and introduced many of the school’s latest academic programs.

Maher also directed several major construction and renovation projects on the school’s campus, according to a news release.

"Michael has overseen a proud and distinguished period in Berkshire School’s history," Berkshire School’s board of trustees Chairman Stephen Norman said in a news release. "We are grateful for Michael’s extraordinary years of service and for his steadfast devotion to providing enriching educational opportunities for our students. We wish Michael great success in his future endeavors."

Mulder was appointed interim head of school on Monday. Mulder has been a member of the senior administration team at Berkshire School since 2005, and has more than 25 years of experience in education.

"Pieter Mulder’s demonstrated record of accomplishment, unwavering commitment and deep knowledge of Berkshire [School] make him the right choice to lead the school," Norman said in the news release.

"Berkshire [School] has never been stronger, and under Pieter’s leadership, it will continue to offer an exceptional education for talented students of great character."
