PITTSFIELD -- City firefighters quickly doused what was likely an accidental fire on Dewey Avenue on Monday afternoon.
Around 3:50 p.m., the Pittsfield Fire Department responded to a 911 call of smoke and flames from the second story of a vacant duplex at 143/145 Dewey Ave., across from Prospect Street. Within minutes, firefighters had the fire contained where it began on the north side of the residence, according to Deputy Fire Chief Bruce Kilmer.
"Fortunately, someone saw it and we got to it quickly," he said.
Kilmer noted there was minor structural damage to the wall and windows at the fire's point of origin.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Kilmer said the fire appears to be an accident.
One Pittsfield police officer injured his right hand when he tried to enter the building in an effort to evacuate residents, not knowing the building was unoccupied.
