Lee:

Volunteers needed
for cancer walk

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Berk shire County is seeking residents from the Berkshire area to serve as committee members or volunteers for the Sunday, Oct. 14, event at the Lee Premium Outlets.

Assistance is needed with logistics, team recruitment, sponsorship recruitment and more.

As the ACS’s premier event to fight breast cancer, Making Strides is a noncompetitive walk that raises awareness and funds to help fight for every birthday threatened by breast cancer. This year, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Berkshire County will be one of more than 270 events being held across the country.

In 2012, the American Cancer Society is commemorating 20 years of saving lives through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and celebrating the more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors who will see another birthday this year.

For more information about the Berkshire County walk, or to find out how to get involved, call (413) 493-2120, email arlela.bethel@cancer.org, or visit cancer.org/stridesonline.

Fundraiser nets
$20K for nonprofits

The first Audie Furgal Tennis Classic, held on June 30 at the Berkshire West Athletic Club, netted $20,261.59 and will benefit Porchlight VNA (formerly Lee Regional VNA) and the Lee Community Tennis Association.

Seventy-five percent of the net profits will be used to purchase updated telemonitoring machines for Porchlight VNA with the balance supporting the Lee CTA’s Junior Tennis Programs in Berkshire County.

The event honored the late Audie Furgal, a Lee resident, who died in January after a year-long battle with lung cancer.

A total of 120 players participated in morning divisional round- robin matches held at 34 tennis courts in Berkshire County. A buffet lunch was served to more than 200 under the tent at Berkshire West. Lunch was followed by both silent and live auctions, division playoffs and other BWAC activities.

The second annual Audie Furgal Tennis Classic has been scheduled for Saturday.
