Juanita Knott, Stuyvesant town historian, will give a talk on Civil War hero Patrick Sweeney from Stuyvesant at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Canaan Historical Society located on Warner Crossing Road, off County Route 5. A detour is in place for bridge work; follow the detour signs.
Sweeney was a railway switchman during the Civil War and he prevented a potentially deadly train collision in April 1862. He was later rewarded for his courageous stance by the president of the Hudson River Railroad.
The event is free and refreshments will be served.
